"Santa Maria La Rota or Terrae Rotarum" is the Greek origin of the name of this characteristic village called Rota Greca. Details of the start of its existence have been lost, but seems to date back to 1089 when its name appears for the first time in a papal scribe. The village, populated by Albanian refugees, was built in the style of a circular urban structure, typical of the Albanian land settlements.
During the "Risorgimento" (XIX century) the village paid tribute to the revolutionary and heroic contribution of Lieutenant Gaspare De Fiore and many others for their acts of heroism with the "Colonna del generale Pace".
